Many fear spiders, snakes and clowns – but is your strongest phobia a fear of public speaking?
One of, if not the, greatest barriers to fully expressing ourselves is fear. That fear comes in a variety of packages: fear of what someone in authority might think, fear of embarrassment, fear of being inappropriate, fear of showing “too much” emotion, fear of getting it wrong, fear of stepping on toes… and the list goes on.
Research in neuroscience indicates that when operating out of fear, our neural activity switches from areas that are linked to creativity, enjoyment, generation of ideas and confidence to areas linked mostly with bare survival and defensiveness. Not surprising then that when we let fear come in… creativity, confidence and full expression go out the window.
